What is involved in the recruitment process?

Cultural fit is critical to us, so we take the recruitment of new people very seriously.

Our first step is to meet with you to establish if there is a “connection”. We then use range of techniques and tools such as an interview (or two or three!), reference checking, and often a series of technical questions / scenarios to learn more about you (and to give you plenty of opportunity to learn more about us).

We use these techniques to highlight your strengths and how you might make your mark. Top

Can I expect to travel?

Yes. Our business is all about providing practical solutions and an essential ingredient of this is spending time in the field to observe problems first-hand.

How much? To a certain extent it is up to you. Some of our employees love to travel and be out on site and they can spend up to 3 weeks each month away from the office. Others prefer to office based assignments with minimal travel.

Our aim is to help you balance life/work commitments and our business and your family commitments change. Top

What is the “ideal” profile for a SVT consultant?

There isn't one; there are many. The real world demands more than a single discipline or one point of view. The complexity of the issues treated in engineering consulting demands great diversity of experience, perspective, thinking style, and expertise.

Some of our consultants are very technical, some are very people oriented and other commerically savvy...our basic philosophy is not to look for an "ideal" but to recruit talented people who share our values. Top

When and how will I be evaluated?

Evaluation at SVT is taken very seriously. One of the most important components of professional development is learning from previous experiences. There is a concerted effort to offer continuous informal feedback as well as more formal feedback at the end of each project. All individuals will be evaluated along a number of dimensions that are important to their development: analytics, presentation style, conceptual ability, interpersonal skills, motivation, initiative, organisation, communication skills, team skills, and overall integrity. How much choice is there in assignments?

Individuals are able to steer their assignments in the directions that most interest them. This doesn’t mean that everyone always ends up with their first-choice, but we try because we know it is a great motivator.

Your actual assignments will depend very much on the specific skills required by the project, workload balancing and career development opportunity. However, over the medium term, everyone is able to shape their portfolio of experiences. Top
